01/11 Afternoon Minute: G’Bye Grantham

While many fans like the firey personality of Todd Grantham, the Associated Press is reporting that his services as Defensive Coordinator will “not be retained” for the 2008 season.

This isn’t a surprise given the fact that the Browns were one of the worst defensive units in the league this past season, finishing 30th overall – mostly thanks to cold weather near the end.

The surprising part of this is that the 41-year old coordinator had just signed a two-year extension back in June.  My how the tide turns when you give up 360 total yards per game.

…despite an upgrade in personnel through free agency and the draft, the Browns’ defense never improved at stopping the run during Grantham’s tenure. Cleveland ranked 30th against the run in 2005, 29th in 2006 and 27th this season.

Mel Tucker Jr. (current secondary coach) appears to be the front-runner to replace Grantham.  If I were Romeo Crennel, I would look outside a bit as well as this secondary allowed 340 completions this season.  Not good.
